Positionierung - Teil 4

Let’s get this over with…

Positionierung - Teil 2

Was interessiert mich eigentlich?

Plans

Although there seems to be nothing going on on my blog I have already a lot of plans for the future. At the moment I excitedly await the arrival of my first child. Therefore I admittedly spend very little time managing my blog.

One of the next things I plan to do is to change my review section. I like to read and watch reviews but I think that I do not have it in me to do the necessary research in order to put out a full review of a movie that would be complete and good enough so I could justify it. Nevertheless I would like to share my thoughts on some movies or books that moved me in some way good or bad.

After watching several trailers for upcoming films I noticed that there were quite a few at which I tend to roll my eyes at. But thinking about it, many of these movies are just aimed a quite different target group than the one I fall into and therefore I have no real right to judge these movies.

So in the future I will try to take a more balanced few on things and will call this segment no longer „my review“ but rather „thoughts on…“. Of course there are still movies that I think are great and some that make me really really angry, but both kinds seem to struck some chord inside myself even if it might be a disharmonic one. Even bad movies are in some way justified if they cause me to think or get angry or if I try to analyze what exactly I hate about them. I guess what I try to say is that there is no bad movie, book or art in general. It just either touches me in some way or I don’t care about it because I am not the right audience.

Other plans are also in the making but at the moment I cannot give you any clear schedule because of the great and exciting changes that take place within my growing family.

Evolution (Also falls under Drunk Ramblings)

Hi there!

My blog stalled. Big deal. The 5 readers I had will probably get over it. Nevertheless the last few weeks have not been unproductive, only my real life got in the way of my neatly scheduled blogging life so the blogging life had to get out of the way and stand in the cold waiting for real life to finish its job.

Before I stretch the metaphor any further let me tell you what happened. At the moment a lot is changing in my life. A new family member is due to arrive soon and preparations have to be made. Also I have to deal with frustrations that life throws constantly at you and which I have to dodge in order to keep sane and out of crisis. Blogging seems to be an unnecessary burden in such circumstances and therefore it is most often the first thing to get canceled from the to-do-list.

At least my neat little schedule of 30 day challenges every two months is no longer a thing I want to pursue. I have already told that there will be some changes but changing just the schedule won't be enough. I need more freedom. Not so much from the "reader" whoever you might be, but from myself. I tend to restrict myself to plans and schedules, which I can't keep up with for long and than I get the feeling that I fail when I do something else. But after all - WHO CARES? - Nobody will give a shit if I write regularly or if at all. Everybody has to live with what I give him/her or else search some other place to waste some time.

So what is the deal here for the future. Fact is, I don't know. I like the concept of 30-Day-Challenges but my current clear out challenge (about which I haven't even blogged yet) has proven that it is harder than it sometimes seems. I also like reviews, but they are a lot of work in research and reading and drafting before you get a decent post. I also would like some followers or people who are interested in what I have to say but the "rules" to get more people involved in your project are very time consuming and success is not always around the corner, so why bother. I often have new ideas that flash through me but almost never do I get them transported into the real world. Even while blogging I restrict myself to certain topics and therefore hinder myself to get my thoughts at least written down somewhere. THIS HAS TO STOP. From now on I plan to just do as I please. Blog about what I want, when I want. If I start a project, a challenge, a review, you will read it. If I just want to ramble about my frustrations while I'm sitting at home drunk after two "godfathers" you will also read it (ok, if it is too embarrassing the next day I might delete or modify the entry) but at least for a certain timespan you might be able to see my most vulnerable and maybe even most thoughtful moments.

So for now this will be it. Greetings...

Short Update

For those of you wondering (if someone actually does anyway), I will reconsider the whole challenge/blogging thing during the next few days and come up with some changes.

The first few challenges went rather well but at the moment I feel too restricted by the 30-days-blogging every-day-about-the-progress-with-daily-picture-thing that I was trying to keep going during the last few months. I think that it was a good way to start me into action but now I feel a certain stress with sticking to this scheme. This slowed me down and caused the 1 month delay in blogging to slip, so now I'm actually up to date, which puts even more pressure on my spare time.

The first 3 challenges have proven that I can do it and that I'm not predestined to fail every project I tackle. I also like blogging but to have to come up with text and pictures for every single day is difficult at times and I think that on most days it was more quantity than quality. I decided to change that. I will no longer blog daily but only when I have to tell you something. I will keep you updated on my projects but maybe many of them will not strictly follow the 30-Day rule (e.g. the current clear-out-challenge). Also there will not be a picture with every post, only if I see fit.

If you want to follow me more closely you can follow my new twitter account at twitter.com/mark_us_now where I will tweet about my current life and status in general and also about my projects and thoughts which are too small to justify a full blog entry.

So I hope you stay with me for my upcoming project (which will be clearing out all my old clutter from my apartment) and see you soon (all of my 5 devoted readers;-)) with a new post in about a week.

Can't Stop

I should already be preparing my next challenge but just don't find the time or the right motivation to get it on its way. I have already chosen a subject and I can tell you that it will involve a lot of writing and also a lot of planning ahead. So far I couldn't get around doing much because of all the crochet work done in my last challenge. At the moment I'm really motivated to do more of that stuff. I can't even watch a movie without my fingers starting to tingle. I have completed the pieces of the challenge that I haven't got finished and also learned some basic knitting techniques. I would like to start knitting too, but so far I didn't decide on a piece I want to make. I have found an interesting instruction for a knitted tie but the instruction is in english and I have to translate the technical terms for the knitting stitches first. I already know them for crochet so I can read english instructions but knitting is new territory for me.

But nevertheless another thing the last challenge did for me is giving me so much practice on crocheting that now I really like to do it because it no longer is a pure learning experience which can be exhausting but rather it is fun to use the already learned skills on anything I want to create. This is so much more fulfilling than sitting passively in front of the TV. As you can see in the picture above I have started on a new piece, a pair of gloves for myself. Winter is coming up fast and I'm excited to make something that I can really use and wear. They also will have a special feature because there are little slits on every finger so you can push out your fingertips when needed and use them as fingerless gloves if you have to handle something like money or the bus-ticket. I think I will finish them within the next week and I'm very excited to wear my custom fitted gloves. It is just like making fire or hunting or growing your own food. To really do stuff that supply your often most primary needs is such a really satisfying feeling. I can only recommend this for anyone who wants to improve his/her life.

Boot Camp

Today I had some time and I wanted to train for my upcoming challenge. So I grabbed some wool and started to make a small crochet piece.

tool and wool
I also tried a new technique for me - namely embroidery (well it was two points stitched onto the piece but still) - and I have to say this will require more practice than I thought. Especially when placing it on a crochet work of mine, with its rather uneven underground made of holes and supertight knots.

But all in all it took me not more than maybe an hour. Ok, given that it was a rather small piece today (an apple-slice - see the finished work on Beatritsche's kreAKTIVität) I will need considerable more time each day during my challenge since most of the pieces I will make are larger than this one. So it will be a month full of sleep deprivation I guess, but without sacrifice there is no victory.

The Challenge within the Challenge

While planning my next few weeks of making crochet projects I realized that not only the project itself takes up time but also the blogging about my experiences.

So in reality blogging every day, if possible with a picture to make it more interesting is a challenge in itself. At least while I was researching for new 30 Day challenges I stumbled more than once over the „Write a blog-entry every day“ and „Take a picture every day“ Challenges.

Well so much for pushing my ego - now I continue with planning.

When will it all start?

The Plan is to make one challenge every two months, so I can get some rest and plan the new challenges in between. The first one is in the planning stage right now and will start in september.

Due to the delay in blogging about it (see my former blogpost) the blog will fully start at the end of september. During challenge months the updates will come daily, in the months in between I will try to make at least one to three posts a week about the planning stage of the next challenge and probably about other stuff, maybe some reviews if I find the time to do them.

This time for real!

This is my third attempt to make some kind of blog with some kind of content. None of my previous projects actually got made. All of them got abandoned shortly after the planning stage.

A short history of failure!

The first idea for a blog was inspired by the micronation Molossia. I was fascinated by the idea of making my own micronation, blogging about my daily events as if I was prime minister of my own little nation. The plan was to declare my apartment as the exile embassy of my nation where my wife and I live until we can afford to found our nation on real land. Our daily lives should be converted into interesting blog posts of acts of state.
Well, I told my friends excitedly about my project, got some affirmative nods, and as the actual work started...I failed. First I couldn't decide on a name, neither on a flag...and finally after I started to create the webpage for our nation I realized I will need more pictures for it...and lost interest.

2nd try!

After the idea of the nation failed because the amount of personal dedication exceeded the expected gain in personal satisfaction, my wife and I decided to create a blog where we reviewed anything that had an impact in our life. Starting from movies, to food, restaurants, electronic gadgets, hotels, etc. The idea was inspired by the Website ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com and especially the nostalgia critic. I really enjoy his work and the fact that the people on the website seemed to be everyday normal people like you and me and not some outer worldly celebrities which have lifestyles that can only be fathomed by someone as average as I am.
The ideas for things to review were plenty and after I told everyone about the project some friends even wanted to join and make reviews of their own. I actually got as far as creating the blog, but than not much content came from my friends and I myself found it hard to make some quality-posts while working 40-50 hours a week. So the project was also declared a failure (even if I still don't want do admit that completely).

Hopefully this time it works!

The inspiration for the new project came from the website Ted.com where there are tons of interesting videos with inspiring ideas and information. Two videos from this site were the starting point for my new project. The first of them was a talk about 30 Day Challenges from Matt Cutts. His idea is to try something new and possibly life improving for 30 days. The timespan is short, so you probably won't fail, and it makes daily life more memorable. In addition to that you might get to know yourself better and probably create a habit that improves your life. So all in all there seems to be little or at least manageable effort and a lot of benefits.
The other talk that came to me as a revelation was Keep Your Goals to Yourself by Derek Sivers. His theory suggests that you are less likely to achieve a goal when you tell everyone of your friends in advance. Because than you already get some of the credit for having the idea and the plan and are less likely to actually make the hard work to reach the goal.
Looking back at my previous projects I believe this is totally true for myself. Every time I have an idea for a project I tell everyone and then fail.

The Plan!

So this time I will not tell the world what my next 30-Day challenge will be. I will keep it to myself, write down how it went for me day by day, and only after completing a challenge will I blog about it with a time delay of one month. For you the reader it makes no difference, but for me it probably is the key to finally succeeding in at least some of my projects.
